Encouraged by his mother, who was a gospel singer, Yonrico started playing drums in the gospel church at age 7. By the time he was 13, he was considered the top drummer in Detroit for gospel music. At 14 he began studying with Motown drummer George Hamilton

After high school graduation, he attended the University of Kentucy, where he studied with Dave Davenport, professor of percussion and principle timpanist of the Lexington Philharmonic after being voted Drummer of the Year during his freshman year,Yonrico earned his Bachelors Degree in performance percussion in 1978. In 1979 he became the Artist in Residence at the Neighborhood Center for the City of Atlanta.

Over the past Twenty years, Yonrico has had the privilege of playing with the following people:
  • Stevie Wonder, Whitney Huston, Peabo Bryson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles,
  • Sammy Davis Jr., Chuck Berry, M C Hammer, George Howard, Freddie Hubbard,
  • George Benson, Phillip Bailey, Anita Baker, After Seven, Allman Brothers Band,
  • Kansas, Sonny Stitt, Andy Gibb, Cecil Bridgewater, Alvin Batiste,
  • Mose Allison, Gary Burton, Stephanie Mills, Urble Green, Fiji Mariners, Andrew White,
  • Gregg Allman, The Three Degrees, The Wiz, John Denver, Ben E. King, 5 Guys named Moe,
  • Dream Girls, The Lexington Philharmonic, Widespread Panic, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
  • And Phil Lesh among others.

Since 1995, Yonrico has been touring, recording and writing with the Derek Trucks Band which released its self-titled debut CD on Landslide Records in October 1997. The band is constantly on tour, playing over 250 shows a year both nationally and internationally. They have performed with and opened for many artists such as Buddy Guy, Joe Satriani, John Popper, Gatemouth Brown, Greg Allman & Friends, Government Mule, Leftover Salmon, Warren Haynes, and Butch Truck's solo project Frogwings. The Derek Trucks Band has also played on the H.O.R.D.E. tour two years in a row. The Derek Trucks Band released its second Album, "Out of the Madness" in November 1998 on House of Blues Records.

When Yonrico is not touring with the Derek Trucks Band he performs in his own project, The Yonrico Scott Band, comprised of many Atlanta musical greats, such as Kofi Burbridge and Todd Smallie. Other solo projects include drum clinics and performances with the infamous Zambiland Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Yonrico's instruments of choice are Lp Percussions,Everyones Drumming,Pearl Drums and Zildjian sticks and cymbals
